AP to urge AICTE to cancel second shift.

AP to urge AICTE to cancel second shift.

Senior officials from the higher education department will meet the chairman of All India Council for Technical Education, Prof. S.S. Mantha, and other officials in New Delhi on Monday to check the feasibility of setting of more engineering colleges in the state ahead of the new academic year.

The principal secretary of higher education, Mr C.R. Biswal, the commissioner for technical education, Mr Laxminarayana and the vice-chancellor of JNTU-Hyderabad, Prof. D.N. Reddy, will submit a letter on behalf of the state government urging the AICTE not to grant second shift and additional sections in the existing engineering colleges and discourage the setting up of new colleges in the state this year.

The team will submit statistics on availability of engineering seats and actual demand to prove the "gross mismatch" between the two. The delegation will inform the AICTE that the state already has 707 engineering colleges with an intake of about three lakh seats and last year nearly one lakh seats went vacant due to poor demand. Several engineering colleges located in the districts and semi-urban areas are heading for closure while colleges located in Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam have been seeking additional sections based on "locational advantage".

The team will also request the AICTE to fix a cut-off date for approvals and renewals this year to avoid delay in admissions process.

‘Love’ for science costs 25% their language tests.

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 05:57 AM PDT

'Love' for science costs 25% their language tests.

The recently announced first-year Intermediate results have revealed that nearly 25 per cent of the students failed in language papers. Many blame this on the fact that most lecturers and students lay stress only on science subjects and neglect language subjects in the rush to secure good ranks in Eamcet, IITJEE, AIEEE and other competitive exams. Of the total 8.51 lakh students who appeared for the first year Inter exams this year, 1.85 lakh have failed in English and 62,000 in Telugu. Of them, 36,000 got zero marks in English and 24,000 scored nil in Telugu.

Of the total 18 lakh students who enrol into Intermediate courses in the state, nearly 14 lakh opt for science streams, mainly MPC, BiPC and MEC. Majority of these students sit for competitive exams like IITJEE, Eamcet, AIEEE etc. to secure seats in engineering, medical and pharmacy colleges. Their focus is mainly on maths, physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, economics and commerce right from first year. The policy of the state government to give 25 per cent weightage for science subjects in Eamcet since the 2008-09 academic year has been prompting the students to concentrate exclusively on science subjects.

"The weightage for science subjects in Eamcet has resulted in students, lecturers and college managements neglecting the language papers. They start work on the language subjects just before the exams begin, leading to poor marks. This trend has become pronounced since 2008-09, the year government started giving 25 per cent weightage for Inter science subjects in Eamcet," said Mr K. Madhusudhan Rao, a senior lecturer.
