Exam fee penalty earns JNTU massive profits.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad has earned `81 lakh this year by way of penalties levied on students submitting their Eamcet applications after the due date. The overall income from Eamcet has reached Rs 9.49 crore so far. While the application fee for Eamcet is just Rs 250 if submitted within the due date, students are allowed to submit late applications with penalties of Rs 500, Rs 1,000, Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 after the due date. The penalty increases with every passing week after the due date. Students still have the provision to submit applications with a penalty of Rs 10,000 till the evening of May 19 for the exam scheduled for May 22.

While 7,283 students submitted applications by paying a penalty of Rs 500, 2,824 students submitted with a penalty of Rs 1,000. Similarly, 308 students paid a penalty of Rs 5,000 and another 13 students paid a penalty of Rs 10,000. With three days still left for submitting applications with a penalty of `10,000, the Eamcet officials expect to receive around 100 more applications that will result in additional income of Rs 10 lakh.

However, students who applied by paying a penalty of Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 will be allotted centres only in Hyderabad to appear for Eamcet this year unlike earlier when they had an opportunity to opt for a centre of their choice. The decision was taken to check malpractices, particularly in the medical stream exam, after it was found that some of these students were "repeaters" who were appearing for Eamcet continuously since 2005 with an intention of helping other students copy from their answer sheets.

EAMCET on May 22 amidst tight security.

HYDERABAD: Eamcet-2011 for admissions into engineering and medical colleges will be held amidst tight security on May 22. Officials decided to beef up security at all entrance examination centres in the state since a gang indulging in largescale malpractice was busted last year.

At a media conference held in the city, Eamcet officials said that cellphone jammers will be installed at all the problematic centres in the state, including the ones in Kurnool, Kadapa and Tirupati. Students will be frisked before entering the examination centres. If found with any electronic device of data transfer, including cellphones and pagers, candidates will be disqualified.

In the previous year (Eamcet-2010), several students, who had registered for the medical stream of the examination, had carried bluetooth enabled cellphones to get “experts” dictate them answers from outside. A gang of medical students were arrested for organising the crime.

This year, the Eamcet authorities will also collect the thumb impression of candidates who appear for the examination to prevent incidences of impersonation. The JNTU authorities have also employed special observers to check on candidates writing the examination. Police personnel at examination centres will be doubled this year. Even district collectors will employ a team of officials to carry out random checks at examination centres.

JNTU officials said that security is being beefed up as per the instructions of the state government and AP State Council of Higher Education ( APSCHE).

The officials also said that students, who have been repeating the medical stream test for the past few years, are now under police scanner. “There are 12,247 students who are currently writing the examination year after year. The police have their biodata. This, however, will not lead to any sort of inconvenience to genuine students,” said D N Reddy, vice-chancellor, JNTU and chairman, Eamcet committee. He said that students have the right to repeat the test as there is no upper age limit for medical entrance examination.

JNTU authorities said that this year a total of 2.78 lakh students will appear for the examination under engineering stream. For medical stream, 68,518 students have registered.

“Every student applying for Eamcet engineering stream would get a seat as there are about 2.8 lakh seats in colleges in the state. We are expecting a sanction of more seats from AICTE,” said D N Reddy.

Eamcet officials said that the first key to Eamcet question paper will be released four days after the exam is conducted. Eamcet results (marks) will be announced within 15 days of the exam. Eamcet ranks will be announced in the first week of July.

Top engg students to be offered chance to study at IITs.

Top engg students to be offered chance to study at IITs.

New Delhi: Students who perform well initially at their engineering colleges may soon be offered an automatic opportunity by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to complete their undergraduate engineering programme at one of the prestigious institutes and also earn a the coveted Ph.D from the IITs.

The panel that had been set up by the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry under former energy commission chairman Anil Kakodkar to create reforms for IITs came up with this suggestion to allow the IITs to pick 2500 brilliant third year students at other engineering colleges and allow them an opportunity to study at the institutes.

According to the blueprint of the proposal, the students will be allowed to complete their B.Tech at the IITs and then also pursue a Ph.D. at the prestigious engineering institutes.

The proposal was put forth by the Kakodkar committee as one of the key components of the strategy to increase the number of PhDs from the IITs.

A member of the panel said that the proposal, if implemented, would create a win-win situation as the selected students will be able to pursue a dream education at the IITs and the institutes will get students ready to take up research studies.

The report was presented before HRD Minister Kapil Sibal last week.

Several faculty members at the IITs have expressed their disapproval about the implementation of the proposal. A senior professor from IIT Kanpur who had been involved with the setting up of the new IIT in Rajasthan said that he wasn’t sure if the IITs could absorb the additional students.

He further added that the burden of work on the faculty at the IITs as well as the infrastructure is already quite high.

The panel has also suggested the HRD ministry to increase the annual fee for the institutes from Rs.50,000 a year toRs.2-2.5 lakh per year.

The IITs had already increased their intake of doctoral students and had also increased their output of PhDs to around 1000 every year.

IITs admit errors worth 36 marks in JEE-2011.

IITs admit errors worth 36 marks in JEE-2011.

New Delhi: In what may come as a major blow to many Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) aspirants, the IITs admitted on Sunday that the question paper for the IIT-JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) that had been conducted last month had errors amounting to about 36 marks.

The errors in the paper can critically affect the admission chances of thousands of aspirants in the test and prove to be a major setback to their performance.

PAPER 2<

The IITs have now offered marks in three questions to all 4.8 lakh aspirants who had appeared for the test this year. However, the institutes will have to face questions from thousands of parents and students over the remaining questions that had errors in which the IITs will be awarding marks to some students and not to others.

The maximum damage because of the erroneous questions and the corrections that the IITs are trying to make by students who were able to spot the errors and had left the questions un-attempted due to fear of being negatively marked for incorrect answers.

There were errors worth 28 marks in the mathematics paper, which is more than the cutoff in the subject for the part four years, which is 1, 5, 7 and 11. This reveals the scale of the problem to be quite huge.

Also, the physics paper had errors worth 8 marks whereas the cutoffs for general candidates in physics over the past four years are 4, 0, 8 and 19.

The gravity of the errors on the part of the IITs in framing the question papers can be judged from the statistic that only 85 marks separate the math score of the 2010 JEE topper and the last selected student who is several thousands of ranks below.

These marks are about three times the marks of the errors in the math papers, that is, 28.

The multiple choice examination had consisted of two question papers. The first paper had errors worth 16 marks in four mathematics questions and another error in a four mark physics question.

The second paper also had errors in a four mark physics question, and 12 marks worth of errors in two mathematics questions, one of which was worth eight marks.

The nature of the errors were either critical typographical mistakes or were logically inconsistent statements. Also, certain questions that were supposed to have only one correct answer, had more than one.
