State bags top AIEEE ranks.

June 5: Three students of Sri Chaitanya created history by featuring in the top-10 ranks in the open category at national level in the prestigious All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE-2011), the results of which were announced on Sunday. Nearly 7,950 students from Andhra Pradesh have secured best ranks in AIEEE and are expected to bag 30 per cent of the total 26,500 seats available in the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), IIITs, deemed universities and other Centre-funded institutions.

It was a "double dhamaka" for Sri Chaitanya students J. Varun, I. Prudhvi Tej and T. Bhargav Reddy, who secured 5th, 7th and 8th ranks respectively at the national level in AIEEE results. The three had also excelled in the recent IIT-JEE results by securing top-10 ranks. While Prudhvi Tej was all-India first in IIT-JEE, Bhargav Reddy was 8th and Varun 9th in the open category. Meanwhile Narayana students Jadav Shiva Kumar and Pranay Gorantla secured first ranks in the ST and OBC categories respectively, while Ramakrishna Banot and Rajeev Kumar got 2nd and 4th ranks in the ST categories. Eighteen Narayana students featured in the top 100 in the open category. Meanwhile, Delta IIT Academy student B. Vivek got 114th rank, while Sumit Kumar and Y. Rohit of the same institution got 126th and 299th ranks respectively.

Interestingly, all the toppers in the top-10 list have decided to opt for IIT-JEE and expressed their desire to join IIT-Bombay. "Despite getting 7th rank in AIEEE, I still prefer to join IIT-Mumbai to purse Electrical Engineering. Becoming an IAS officer is my ultimate goal," said Prudhvi.

6,000 more MBA seats on offer for AP students.

6,000 more MBA seats on offer for AP students.

In the ensuing academic year, an additional 6,000 MBA seats will be on offer for the students in Andhra Pradesh that already has 78,000 seats in 971 MBA colleges. The All India Council for Technical Education has decided to permit 10 new MBA colleges in the state this year and to enhance the intake in another 200 existing colleges.

However, there will be no change in MCA seats this year as there were no applications to set up new colleges or for enhancing the intake. The AP State Council of Higher Education is planning to conduct ICET counselling for admissions to MBA and MCA courses in the first week of July. The counselling will be totally web-based. A total of 1,26,454 students have qualified in ICET this year, while the total seats available in both MBA and MCA courses are 1,28,488, which means nearly 2,000 seats will go vacant even if all the students are admitted. The state currently has 713 MCA colleges with an intake of 50,148 seats. Last year, there were no admissions in nearly 100 MCA colleges, and admissions were in single digits in another 200 colleges. College managements fear that nearly 300 of the 713 MCA colleges will face closure.

Colleges vie for ‘deemed’ status.

Colleges vie for 'deemed' status.

After a gap of two years, the "deemed universities" have come back into focus. Several top engineering colleges in the state are vying for the "deemed" status and have submitted applications to the University Grants Commission. The UGC had stopped processing deemed university applications from 2009, based on a report submitted by the Tandon committee, which blacklisted 44 deemed universities across the country, including the one in Andhra Pradesh — Vignan University — for failing to comply with the norms on faculty and infrastructure.

However, the UGC has recently re-opened the process of examining the deemed varsity applications. This is reportedly due to "political pressure" from the managements. The move came as a surprise, given that the case of prospective blacklisting of 44 deemed universities is still pending with the Supreme Court. These institutions are desperate to acquire a deemed status, to enjoy autonomy in matters of admission and fees. Interestingly, all these institutes are professional colleges that offer engineering, pharmacy, MBA and MCA courses.

There is a huge demand for these courses in the state, and certain institutions are frantically trying to obtain "deemed" status. Prominent among these are CBIT, Gokaraju Rangaraju, JBIT, MNR, Srinidhi, St. Mary's and RGIT-Nandyal. Many of these institutions are considered among the top 10 engineering institutes in the state. Apart from them, the Sweekar Rehabilitation Institute, Secunderabad, Gayatri Vidya Parishad, Montessori Mahila Kalasala and Pulla Reddy Engineering college had also applied for "deemed" status.

The expert committees of UGC and AICTE completed the inspection process of all these institutes in 2008 and 2009 and recommended them for the "deemed" status. Even the state government issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for this purpose. When the stage was set for according a formal "deemed" status to these institutions during the academic year 2009-10, the scenario changed with Mr Kapil Sibal taking over as the HRD minister from Mr Arjun Singh. Mr Sibal ordered a high-level enquiry into all the "deemed" universities and also directed the UGC to keep the new applications on hold.

Not just three, there are more errors in Eamcet-2011: Experts.

Not just three, there are more errors in Eamcet-2011: Experts.

HYDERABAD: Eamcet-2011 question papers could have more errors than those declared by the expert committee of JNTU.

Experts in the city detected six errors in the medical question paper, other than the three declared by the test’s managing committee. The Eamcet committee released the keys for both engineering and medical question papers on May 25.

According to medical entrance coaching experts, questions 42, 49, 56, 58, 60 and 69 in code A are ambiguous and hence should be deleted. They said that the questions in the medical stream of the entrance test carried translation errors and even conceptual errors.

Experts said that Telugu translation for question 49 carried a glaring conceptual error and in question 42, the correct answer does not figure among the four options given (the question cannot be solved as per the Intermediate syllabus prescribed by the Eamcet committee). Question 56 had a grammatical error that could confuse students and question 58 carried a conceptual error, coaching centre officials said.

“Questions which have translation errors are deleted traditionally as students from both English and Telugu medium sections should get an opportunity to score well in the examination. But this year, JNTU officials have not deleted such questions,” said Jaganmohan Rao, BPC (Biology, Physics and Chemistry) expert, Narayana Group of colleges. Average performing students might lose out on medicine ranks if errors are not checked, officials said.

As the number of medical seats in the state is just about 5,000, every error in the question paper could affect a student’s career, experts said. About 65,315 students appeared for the medical stream (BPC) examination this year.

The experts said that they have already petitioned P Jayaprakash Rao, chairman, APSCHE requesting him to delete the questions. Even M V Ramana Rao, convener, Eamcet-2011 was intimated. Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) has put up the keys on its official website for stake holders to give suggestions.

The Eamcet committee has already admitted to one error in the Zoology section (No 71). The question had two correct answers.

Experts said that every year medical stream questions have errors. “We had petitioned the state council several times regarding recurring errors but there has been no change in the system,” said Rao.

Eamcet convener, Ramana Rao stated that the subject experts would look into the errors pointed out by different stake holders and finalise a key. The final key will released along with the results before June 2.
