11,400 students keep off B.Tech.

11,400 students keep off B.Tech.

About 11,740 students who were allotted B.Tech seats in the recently concluded first phase of Eamcet counselling have not reported at their respective colleges within the specified date.

With this, the vacant seats in engineering colleges after the first phase of counselling have gone up to to 70,002 seats in the convenor quota alone.

This has come as a shock to the managements of engineering colleges, which are already reeling under large-scale vacancies.

While 1,33,521 students were allotted seats in the Eamcet counselling, only 1,21,781 students have reported at their colleges to claim admissions.

This is in addition to the 72,500 students who skipped the counselling altogether despite securing qualifying marks in Eamcet.

A total of 2,08,936 students have qualified in Eamcet engineering, but only 1,36,436 students have turned up for counselling in the first phase.

The AP State Council of Higher Education on Thursday issued notifications to conduct a second phase of counselling from September 5 to fill vacant seats. But going by the poor response for the first phase, officials and managements are apprehensive of filling the seats even in the second phase.

As per the fresh schedule, the second phase will be held from September 5 to 8. Students from Rank 1 to 1,00,000 will be called for counselling on Septe-mber 5 and 6. Students from rank 1,00,001 to the last rank will be called on September 7 and 8.

The seat allotment list will be released on September 9.

Students who are not satisfied with the colleges in which there were allotted seats in the first phase and cancelled their admissions can give fresh options on the web in the second phase apart from those who skipped the first phase of counselling.

College-wise vacancy positions will be placed on the Eamcet website by September 5 to enable students to give fresh options.

Ban on distance Ph.D, M.Phil goes.

Ban on distance Ph.D, M.Phil goes.

Universities in the state will offer M.Phil and Ph.D in correspondence mode after a gap of two years.

This follows the recent decision of the University Grants Commission to lift a two-year ban on offering M.Phil and Ph.D through correspondence mode.

However, the universities will not be allowed to set up study centres outside their jurisdiction to offer M.Phil and Ph.D through correspondence mode.

The UGC had imposed a ban on M.Phil and Ph.D through correspondence mode in 2009 following large-scale complaints against several universities regarding irregularities in admission procedures and awarding Ph.Ds and M.Phils against norms.

In AP, Dravidian Univ-ersity was under fire for granting over 8,000 PhDs in just two years by setting up study centres across the state. It was alleged that the varsity had allowed private players to set up study centres, charging around Rs 1 to Rs 2 lakh for awarding Ph.Ds. The state subsequently imposed a ban on awarding Ph.Ds and M.Phils through correspondence mode.

Other universities, however, opposed the ban, saying they followed the norms while awarding the degrees. The UGC consulted legal experts who advised lifting the blanket ban subject to the conditions that all relevant norms are followed.

No takers for 159 MCA colleges.

No takers for 159 MCA colleges.

After engineering colleges, it's now the MCA colleges in the state that are facing the threat of shutdowns due to low admissions. Though 129 MCA colleges and 402 MBA colleges recorded 100 per cent admissions, as many as 159 MCA colleges witnessed zero admissions in the Icet seat allotment list that was released on Tuesday.

The demand for MBA courses has also come down with nine MBA colleges recording zero admissions. Students qualified in Icet (Integrated Common Entrance Test) are eligible to opt for MBA and MCA courses and a majority of them this year has opted for the MBA courses. From a total of 31,181 MCA seats that was on offer in the convener quota in the Icet Web-based counselling, only 9,443 seats got filled, leaving 21,738 seats vacant.

Many more colleges may shut shop.

Many more colleges may shut shop.

Of the total 62,860 MBA seats available in the convenor quota, only 39,719 were filled, leaving 23,141 seats empty. In MCA courses, 241 colleges had admissions in the range of just zero to nine, 71 colleges had 10-19 and 27 colleges had 20-29 admissions. In MBA courses, in 101 colleges, only nine seats were filled, while 129 colleges had admissions in the range of 10-19 and 104 colleges had 20-29.

The managements of MBA and MCA colleges and officials of the higher education department, meanwhile, are expecting the worst since only 50,193 students out of 1,26,619 qualified students turned up for counselling. While 70 per cent of the total seats are filled in the convener quota through Icet counselling, the remaining 30 per cent seats are in the management quota. The annual fee is `27,000 in the convener quota and `78,000 in the management quota. This year, all seats in the management quota have remained vacant barring top-20 colleges.

The state currently has 51 university MBA colleges with an intake of 2,590 seats and 886 private MBA colleges offering 60,270 seats. There are 43 university MCA colleges with 1,998 seats and 591 private MCA colleges offering 29,183 seats. Hundreds of MCA colleges came up in the state in the last five years to cash in on the IT boom. However the poor response from students forced around 200 colleges to close down over the last two years. The managements fear that 159 colleges more will down their shutters this year.

Phase II of Icet counselling will be held on September 13 and 14. The seat allotment list will be out on Sept-ember 15. Phase II of Eamcet engineering counselling will be held on September 5.
