500 graduate from Nalsar law varsity.

Over 500 LLB and LLM students graduated this year from the Nalsar University on Saturday. Speaking at the ninth convocation of university the Union minister for law and justice, Mr Salman Khurshid said, "The historic Parliamentary response to the Civil Society movement in the country marks the emergence of novel dynamics of decision making. The developments call for legal educationists and researchers to analyse, redefine and elucidate a new politico-legal process of governance."

He further stated, "The quality of governance must squarely rest on the quality of legal education in the country. The very nature of law, legal institutions and law practice, are in the midst of a paradigm shift. There should be effective linkage between the law schools, the Bar and the Bench." Referring to the report of the working group on legal education submitted to the Knowledge Commission, Mr Khurshid quoted, "The legal system should also effectively facilitate eradication of poverty and equitable and environmentally sustainable economic growth."

Exam reforms to boost learning.

Posted: 17 Sep 2011 05:44 PM PDT

Exam reforms to boost learning.

In a move aimed to discourage students from rote learning and encouraging them to develop analytical skills, the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan has changed the examination pattern for students of government schools and private schools that are recognised by the government from Classes I to VIII. The new pattern will come into effect from the ensuing quarterly exams. The SSA, which monitors the education of students in government schools from Classes I to VIII, has introduced a 'Learning Enhancement Programme' (LEP) as part of the new exam policy to facilitate complete understanding of the subjects in a scientific way.

All these years, the students were given a one-page question paper in six different subjects and were asked to write the required answers within the specified word-count. However, according to the new pattern, each subject will now have a four-page question paper with questions drafted in a way that will test the analytical and understanding skills of the students. The department has decided to supply new question papers to all the schools. However, the new system has evoked criticism from teachers' unions who argued that the decision was taken in haste without consulting the teachers and students. "The new examination system is good but we came to know about the new method just two weeks ago, while the exams are scheduled to commence from next week. How can the government expect the students to perform well in the exams if they are not trained as per the new pattern?" asked Mr K. Venugopal, president, Andhra Pradesh Teachers Federation.

New GRE test: A positive change.

Posted: 17 Sep 2011 05:41 PM PDT

New GRE test: A positive change.

What are the peak test-taking months for the GRE test?

The peak test-taking months are the fall months – September to November – each year.

What are the main changes in the new GRE pattern?

Less reliance on vocabulary that is out of context and emphasis on reading; no antonym and analogies and new types of questions in the Verbal Reasoning (VR) and Quantitative Reasoning (QR) sections ; the ability to edit or change answers, skip questions and go back within a section, and the introduction of on-screen calculator have been the main changes.

What were the reasons for this change and how will it help test-takers ?

When we analysed what students do in schools, we realised that they do less of synonyms and vocabulary-intensive work and more of reading comprehension. Hence, we added question types that represent what students encounter in academic life, both, in graduate and business schools and beyond that, in their workplaces. We dropped the single item vocabulary questions like antonym and analogies in the VR section and increased readingcomprehension type of questions. For the QR section, we increased data interpretation type of questions and introduced realworld problem-solving types of questions.

You have changed the scoring pattern too. Why?

This is a major change brought about for score users – business schools and graduate schools who judge proficiency of candidates based on their scores. The scale that we had earlier for VR and QR had 10-point increments. We realised that often they would misinterpret small differences between scores as large differences. For example, a candidate who has secured 620 in VR vis-a-vis a candidate who has secured 600, is actually ahead only by two score/ scale points, while the score users might misinterpret it as a 20 point difference. In the revised scale, it is a one-point increment. This will help minimise misinterpretation by score users.
