Agitation hits tech. students.

Agitation hits tech. students.

Engineering students in Telangana region are facing the risk of 'attendance shortage' due to holidays announced by college managements in support of Sakala Janula Samme. Same is the case with MBA, MCA, M.Tech, B.Pharmacy and M.Pharmacy students since these courses are also offered by the same engineering colleges on the same campus.

Out of total 717 engineering colleges in the state, about 365 are in Telangana alone. About 4 lakh students are pursuing various professional courses in these colleges. These colleges have remain closed since September 18 and there is no clarity when the colleges will reopen though the managements expect it to happen only after October 9. With this, students are facing the risk of not meeting the minimum 75 per cent attendance norm to appear for semester exams.

The JNTU-Hyderabad, which governs over 90 per cent of the engineering colleges in Telangana region, made it clear that it has not announced any holidays for engineering colleges, the managements have declared holidays till the APSRTC resumes its bus services completely. Students are worried after they received SMSes from JNTU-Hyderabad stating that it has not declared any holidays on account of strike and colleges should function normally. As per existing rules, it is mandatory for every engineering student to have 75 per cent attendance to sit for the exams. A 10 per cent concession is given on medical grounds but students having below 65 per cent attendance are not allowed to take the exams.

CCE system for all schools.

Posted: 28 Sep 2011 06:04 PM PDT

CCE system for all schools.

The School Education Department will introduce the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system for classes I to VIII from the next academic year. According to a Government Order dated September 19, the initiative seeks to help the students move from rote learning to an application-based approach.

The decision to introduce CCE has been taken following the recommendation of an expert group constituted by the Directorate of Teacher Education Research and Training (DTERT). According to sources in the School Education Department, the group comprised former director of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), G. Balasubramanian, heads of government and Matriculation schools and senior officials.

A senior official of the Department said that the CCE will be introduced for classes IX and X from 2013-14. "The modalities in teacher training will have to be worked out soon. We have just initiated the process," he said.

Currently, CCE is the prevalent evaluation system followed in all schools affiliated to the CBSE. It seeks to spread the evaluation over an entire academic year, rather than judging a student’s potential and performance based on select term-end or annual examinations.

The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Act 2009 also emphasises the need for a continuous and comprehensive evaluation system that would factor in various aspects, including a student’s ability to work in a team, communication skills and creative ability.
Grading system

As per the CCE, students are evaluated through Formative Assessments (FA) that is conducted throughout each term, and Summative Assessments (SA) carried out at the end of a particular term. Scholastic areas covering all academic subjects and non-scholastic areas, including life skills, arts and sports will be considered in the evaluation. While the FA will be carried out by the teacher for class participation, projects and discussions, SA will largely be done through a paper-pen test.

The FAs (accounting for 40 marks) and SAs (for 60 marks) thrice, covering three terms and the cumulative scores would be converted to grades, on a 10-point scale.

Welcoming the State government’s initiative, CBSE school heads observed that the move will bring in more parity among schools across Boards. C.Satish, Senior Principal, R.M.K. Group of Schools, said: "It is a great initiative. It is the best way to assess students and we see that students do not get unnecessarily stressed around examination time."

All the same, M.Chidambarahari, Advisory-President, Tamil Nadu Graduate Teacher’s Association, has a word of caution for the Department. "A good programme to train teachers should be introduced first. The Department should not introduce the CCE in a hurry before that. Also, the Directorate of Government Examinations or some other agency should act as a monitoring body, to see if teachers have done a fair job of evaluation," he said.

Additionally, the syllabus should also be periodically updated and emphasis should be on encouraging students to apply concepts learnt, he added.

AP has 52 illegal B-Schools.

Posted: 28 Sep 2011 06:01 PM PDT

AP has 52 illegal B-Schools.

Andhra Pradesh has the second highest number of unrecognised business schools in the country. Out of 348 unapproved B-schools identified by the All India Council for Technical Education, the state has 52. Most of these institutions are offering post-graduate diploma in management (PGDM) courses without obtaining the necessary approval from either AICTE or the state government.

Of these 348 unapproved institutions, Delhi and Maharashtra top the list with 75 each, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 52. The state government had even appointed a committee six months ago to check unrecognised B-schools in the state. Though the committee submitted its report long ago, the government failed to initiate any steps to curb unrecognised B-schools in the state. The committee comprising Prof V. Venkata Ramana, the dean of School of Management Studies, University of Hyderabad, and Prof Kodanda Reddy of Sri Venkateshwara University suggested action against these institutes under the Indian Penal Code, but the report is gathering dust since August.

Many students had joined the B-schools thinking that with an MBA degree they will get lucrative jobs in the corporate world. They had spent between `10 lakh to `15 lakh as course fees. However, the students got a rude shock when they realised that their degrees are from universities that are "blacklisted" in the corporate world. It has been found that many business schools that promised to offer "quality education" actually employ faculty with no industry experience.
