Posted: 22 Oct 2011 07:15 AM PDT

CAT-2011 from today.

HYDERABAD : The Common Admission Test (CAT), the qualifying examination for admissions to the 13 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), will be held over a 28-day period between October 22 and November 18.

The examination will start at 10 am (first section) and another at 3.15 pm (second section).

There were two examination centres in Andhra Pradesh— MLR Institute of Technology, Dundigal and Prometric Testing Private Limited, Banjara Hills— both in Hyderabad. Students need to report at the test centre 90 minutes before the commencement of the examination to avoid last-minute stress.

According to information, the expected number of candidates this year is 2.05 lakh for about 3,000 seats in 13 IIMs.

This year's CAT will have two sections as against three last year. The candidates will have 70 minutes' time in each section to answer 30 questions in each.

The examination will have an on-screen countdown timer. Once the time ends for the first section, the candidate will have to move to the second section and cannot to go back. The first section will focus on Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation, and the second on Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning.

A 15-minute tutorial will be provided before the start of the test, and candidates are advised to go through it carefully before attempting the main examination.

The total duration will be two hours and 35 minutes including the tutorial.

Three new cities _ Bhilai, Jammu and Dehradun _ have been added to the previous 33 centres across the country.

Prometric India is conducting the examination on behalf of the IIMs.

Speaking to Express, Ramnath K, course director of Triumphant Institute of Management Education (TIME), said since CAT was replacing JMET, an admission test to pursue MBA at IITs, the aspirants need not take JMET separately as all the six IITs which are offering the MBA course decided to consider CAT score as eligibility. The prestigious University of Delhi, which used to conduct FMS (Faculty of Management Studies) examination to take admissions to all its management courses, had also decided to consider CAT score as eligibility, he said.

Yet another software firm dupes youngsters.

HYDERABAD : Employees of yet another software firm which allegedly duped them after collecting money promising jobs, approached police to take action against the firm.

The agitated youngsters working at a private software firm, Professional Techno Soft, located at Somajiguda, said the firm promoters collected money ranging from Rs. 50,000- Rs. 1 lakh from them promising jobs to them six months back.

Hundreds of youngsters who completed B.Tech and other courses joined the firm by paying the amount. The recruitments were made through associates of the firm management. Later, management started to remove some from service terming them as 'unfit'. Those who were working were not given salaries since the past few months.

Agitated over this, a few employees staged a protest in front of Punjagutta police station to lodge a complaint against the firm's managing director, K Rami Reddy. One of the promoters allegedly threatened employees stating he is close to a senior police official. The employees later met a senior police official to resolve the issue. Though Punjagutta police are tight-lipped over the incident, it is learnt a case has been registered and Ram Reddy taken into custody.

Dietcet counselling yet to come of age.

Dietcet counselling yet to come of age.

HYDERABAD : While the entire world is going online for everything, including college admissions, the Department of School Education in Andhra Pradesh is still conducting the District Institute of Education and Training Common Entrance Test (Dietcet) counselling for the 2-year TTC course manually at a lone centre (Keys High School, Secunderabad) in the state capital causing severe inconvenience to thousands of students.

As the officials have been continuing the age old process of manual counselling to fill 12,000 seats, students of far off places like Srikakulam and Chittor districts have to come all the way to Hyderabad for counselling incurring huge expenses.

While the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) had switched over to online counselling for Eamcet, Icet and other courses long ago, the School Education Department has initiated no measures to simplify it for the convenience of students.

It is going to issue a notification on Saturday asking 50,000 candidates of the total 1.95 lakh qualified in the entrance test to attend counselling in Hyderabad from October 28 to November 12. Under the manual process, it will take 16 long days to fill up 12,000 seats available across the state. Earlier, the officials issued a notification to conduct counselling for 25 days from September 26 to October 20. But they postponed it due to Sakala Janula Samme launched by the Telangana Political Joint Action Committee.

As the academic session has already got delayed due to the general strike, the officials have reduced the number of counselling days to 16 days now.

The APSCHE completed the first phase of Eamcet counselling to fill up nearly 2 lakh convenor quota engineering seats in just 15 days by setting up counselling centres across the state. The Eamcet students can also exercise their web option in the online counselling. But there is no such facility for Dietcet students.

Though the candidates are well aware of the fact that only one out of the four attending the counselling will get a seat, they have to come all the way to Hyderabad from their native places incurring huge expenses.

The candidates have to bring their parents or guardians along with him/her and they will have to stay for an extra day if the counselling is not completed as per schedule.

It means, they are ready to bear additional expenses. Dietcet convenor P Lakshma Reddy said they were planning to introduce online counselling from the next academic year for the benefit of students. A notification will be issued on Saturday itself, he said.

30-day delay for academics in T.

Posted: 22 Oct 2011 06:51 AM PDT

30-day delay for academics in T.

The ongoing general strike in support of Telangana has forced professional colleges to extend the academic year by a month in the Telangana region. Osmania University has also extended its postgraduate semester by two weeks to make up for the loss of working days on account of the strike.

The academic year should have ended in the second week of April 2012, but has now been extended to the second week of May. Students were unable to attend college for a month because buses were not running, and this meant they could not fulfil the minimum attendance norm of 75 per cent attendance. Unless the academic calendar is extended by a month, students in the Telangana region will not be able to meet the attendance requirement and sit for their exams.

MCI tries to end NEET stand-off.

MCI tries to end NEET stand-off.

The Medical Council of India has initiated steps to break the deadlock over conducting the national common entrance exam for MBBS admissions from this year. The state government had objected to the 'National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test, saying that thousands of students pursuing Intermediate courses in Telugu medium would be at a loss if NEET is held only in English and Hindi.

An MCI team will meet officials of medical education department on Saturday to discuss the issue and clear the doubts about NEET. The team will also meet minister for medical and health D.L. Ravindra Reddy. The state government feels that Eamcet for medical seats should not be replaced by NEET this year as the students have not got enough time to prepare for the new format. However, MCI claims that the NEET syllabus was posted on its website in July and it had also sought feedback nationally from all the stakeholders. The MCI made it clear that it will separately release state-wise and national-wise merit lists, and the states can conduct admissions on their own by following the merit lists and implementing their own reservation matrix.
