| Trai raises SMS limit to 200 per day. Posted: 01 Nov 2011 09:37 AM PDT Trai raises SMS limit to 200 per day. Telecom consumers will now be able to send up to 200 SMSes per day from a SIM, as against the earlier limit of just 100 SMSes per day imposed by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai). “The authority has received representations from some of the service providers and consumers to increase the limit of 100 SMSes per day per SIM. The authority has considered these representations and decided to increase the limit of 100 SMSes per day per SIM to 200 SMSes per day per SIM,” Trai said in a statement on Tuesday. To deter unsolicited SMSes by telemarketing companies, Trai had earlier restricted the number of non-commercial SMSes that can be send from a SIM to 100. There was no restriction on commercial messages sent through telemarketing companies registered with Trai. The new cap of 200 SMSes per sim per day will be effective from Tuesday. | State wants medical entrance test paper in Telugu too. Posted: 01 Nov 2011 08:10 AM PDT State wants medical entrance test paper in Telugu too. The state government has asked the Medical Council of India (MCI) to set the question paper for National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) in Telugu, apart from English and Hindi. D L Ravindra Reddy, minister for health on Thursday announced that while the state government has in principle agreed to participate in NEET from 2012, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has to clear the file for the same. About 40,000 students from Telugu medium appear for Eamcet (Medical) every year. On Thursday, managements of junior colleges and students across the city demanded the state government not to agree to participate in the all-India medical entrance test at least from the coming year. The colleges said that it is not the just the language of the question paper that would create a problem for students. “Intermediate syllabus of the state is quite different from the CBSE syllabus which will form the base for the national level test. The students from the state would get just about three months to prepare for the test. The government should re-examine its decision as it seems to be taken in haste,” said P Madhusudan Reddy, general secretary, AP Government Intermediate College Lecturers’ Association. Private colleges said that the government should have asked for an extension from MCI before it decided to participate in the test. “The state should have agreed to participate in the test from 2013 or 2014,” said a senior professor of Narayana Junior College. They explained that the CBSE syllabus has several portions that conflict with what is being taught in intermediate classrooms. In fact, the students will also have to learn new portions in Biology (Zoology and Botany), lecturers said, adding that they had petitioned the MCI demanding that NEET should be conducted from 2013 instead of 2012. JNTU authorities, who have been conducting the Eamcet medical stream test, however, said that NEET would reduce the stress levels of students. “The students will not have to prepare for different tests all at the same time. On an average, students from the state write at least four medical entrance tests every year. Neet would allow students to write just one entrance test but the state should participate in it when the student community is ready to do so. Right now there are many concerns like the number of test centres in which the test will be held. Eamcet is conducted in every nook and corner of the state for the benefit of students from remote areas. But MCI might restrict the test to a few test centres for smooth management,” said M V Ramana Rao, faculty JNTU and former Eamcet convener. Students are worried that their preparation, which is focused on Eamcet, will not be enough to get through the national level test. “Most students from AP aim at getting a seat in medical colleges within the state and bank mostly on Eamcet. Since the MCI has not specified the syllabus for NEET so far, we are worried that students who have been writing the national level entrance tests will score more than those of us who have studied for two years for Eamcet,” said S Anuradha, a second year student. Officials of Sri Chaitanya Group of colleges, who held a press meet in the city on Thursday, said that they will oppose the government’s unilateral decision on the matter. “We oppose the move, since parents, teachers and students were not consulted before announcing this decision,” they said. | Colleges question timing of NEET. Posted: 01 Nov 2011 08:01 AM PDT Colleges question timing of NEET. Sri Chaitanya Group of Institutions chairman B.S. Rao, has urged the State government to re-think over its reported decision to adopt the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for medical admissions in the State from next year. Dr. Rao told a press conference that it was good to have a common entrance test nation-wide but the timing of the decision was wrong. There is lot of syllabus variation in science subjects across the country and State students would lose out with syllabus disparity ranging from 20 per cent to 50 per cent in chemistry and biology subjects. When just one mark makes difference to admissions in medical colleges such huge variation can create havoc with students ambitions. Moreover, Telugu medium students will find it almost difficult to attempt the test which would be in English and Hindi. Nearly 25 to 30 per cent of students who write EAMCET attempt it in Telugu medium. Students in government colleges will be the most affected as it was impossible for them to plug the existing gap between state and central syllabus. At least, the corporate colleges teach central syllabus to their students as they also appear for other national medical entrance exams. He said any change in such important entrance examinations should be informed to the students when they join the course so that they can prepare keeping the syllabus in view. He said even teachers were not prepared to teach the new syllabus. Dr. Rao said he was in favour of a national entrance exam as students have to write seven to eight exams for various medical colleges but the critical decision has come late. It can be introduced from 2014 or at least next year. He also feared that parents and students would move the courts seeking justice. Several academics are also questioning the haste with which the government has taken a decision. | National entrance test for MBBS from 2012-13. Posted: 01 Nov 2011 07:59 AM PDT National entrance test for MBBS from 2012-13. Students aspiring for MBBS seats will not take the EAMCET route but write the National Entrance and Eligibility Test by Medical Council of India (MCI) from next year. The test will be conducted at the national level by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on behalf of MCI but the counselling and selection would be done by the State government, Director of Medical Education P. Sampath Kumar told The Hindu. He said the MCI was keen to do the selection of candidates also after the test, but the State government retained the initiative for its own reasons. The decision to join the national test was taken in view of the insistence by MCI that there be uniform standards of testing for admissions instead of each State having its own question papers. Nevertheless, there would be both State and national rankings. About 65,000 students appeared for medicine stream of EAMCET last year for 4,300 seats in 12 government and 20 private medical colleges in the State. An all-party meeting convened by the government a few months ago to discuss whether the State could join the national pool for allocation of seats did not find favour with the parties. A.P. and Jammu & Kashmir are the only States which were exempted from joining the Central pool by a Presidential order. The State had to contribute 15 per cent of the seats to outsiders but its own students would have got an additional 1,500 seats at the national level if it had joined the scheme, Dr. Sampath Kumar said. He added that the intake of MBBS seats was likely to go up by 1,000 next year with the addition of 50 seats each in government sector and opening of a few new private medical colleges. Single umbrella The decision to join the national test was also hinted at by Health Minister D.L. Ravindra Reddy earlier in the day. He parried a question by media persons when asked if a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the MCI directive to States to come under a single umbrella was a hindrance. | US students visa for Indians go up. Posted: 01 Nov 2011 07:54 AM PDT US students visa for Indians go up. The US still remains the top education destination for Indians, with US visa applications by Indian students increasing by 18 per cent over the last year. Student visa applications increased by 18 percent, from 39,958 applications in 2010 to 46,982 in 2011, the US embassy said here Friday. Over 100,000 Indian students are currently studying at universities across the US. “This increase denotes the close people-to-people ties between the United States and India, and reflects the desire of highly qualified students to receive a world-class education in the United States,” the embassy said. | Posted: 01 Nov 2011 07:49 AM PDT Several student and youth bodies have opposed the national-level common medical entrance test (National Eligibility and Entrance Test) stating that it will cause a huge loss to students from the State. At a roundtable conducted by Telugu Yuvatha and Telugu Nadu Students’ Federation here on Sunday, the speakers said students aspiring for medical education were already preparing from EAMCET in the State and the sudden decision by the Centre had created a confusion among them and parents. Representatives of DYFI, AIYF, SFI, AISF, AIDSO, and AISB participated in the meet apart from those of the organisers — TNSF and Telugu Yuvatha. Addition of the medicine seats in the State to the Central pool would result in a loss to some backward classes and Muslim minorities, they said. They alleged that the Centre was trying to take the education sector completely under its control and the national-level common entrance test was part of the reforms initiated by Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal. It would cause loss to several States as there was no common syllabus, curriculum and medium for all States, they pointed out.
