Seat hike sparks row.

Seat hike sparks row.

The indiscriminate approvals given by the All India Council for Technical Education for additional intake in pharmacy colleges across the state has been challenged by the Pharmacy Council of India, and students are thus worried about the validity of their degrees.

AICTE has doubled the seats in a majority of pharmacy colleges from 60 to 120. It then increased the intake in some of the pharmacy colleges from 60 to 180, in violation of the norms prescribed by the PCI, the regulator of pharmacy education in the country. The total pharmacy seats in the state shot up to 36,000 this year as compared to 12,000 seats last year.

The PCI has objected strongly to the indiscriminate approval given by AICTE and made it clear that it will not grant recognition to more than 100 seats in a particular college. Students are worried that in the absence of PCI recognition, their pharmacy degrees may not be valid.

The PCI has even filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the orders of AICTE increasing the intake and against the state government for approving the same and including those additional seats in the recent Eamcet counselling.

"As per PCI norms, the maximum intake that can be allowed in a pharmacy college is 100 seats, that too if the college is in operation for four years and fulfills all the norms pertaining to faculty and infrastructure as per Section-XII of the Pharmacy Council of India Act.

Strangely, AICTE has approved additional intake in all the colleges. This will have adverse impact on the quality of pharmacy education," said Prof B. Suresh, president, PCI.

He said PCI's petition in this matter is pending before the Supreme Court and the council has also taken up the issue with the state government, asking it not to give its approval for the additional intake granted by AICTE and to direct the respective universities not to ratify the admissions exceeding 100 in any college.

Andhra Pradesh schools need English teachers.

Posted: 03 Nov 2011 05:40 PM PDT

Andhra Pradesh schools need English teachers.

The state is having difficulty finding teachers for its 355 English medium 'model schools', it's version of Navodaya schools, to be funded by the Centre.

The government needs about 10,000 English medium teachers, who can teach high school students in the CBSE syllabus. The schools are to function from June 2012.

The 355 model schools will be set up in educationally-backward mandals across the state, where girls' literacy rate is dismal. Each school will cost Rs 3 crore, with the Centre contributing 75 per cent of the funds, and the state government the rest.

The government has decided to directly recruit teachers from English medium schools, but it is difficult to recruit teachers who can teach the CBSE syllabus because private schools are offering them higher salaries than the government.

The government pays a meagre Rs 2,000 per month for two-years under "apprenticeship" for teachers with two years of experience. This is hardly likely to attract teachers.

US universities’ fair on Nov 6.

US universities’ fair on Nov 6.

HYDERABAD : The United States India Educational Foundation (USIEF), in collaboration with the Institute of International Education ( IIE), will be organising an US universities’ fair at the Taj Krishna Hotel on November 6. As many as 22 US universities will participate in the event, which is primarily being held to encourage more Indian students to travel to the US for educational purposes. The participating universities will offer detailed information about their various undergraduate and graduate academic programmes during the day-long fair.

Speaking to TOI about the event, to be organised in the city for the first time, Adam J Grotsky, executive director of USIEF said, “We want to bridge the gap between the US and India through education and the fair is only the first step towards that goal. We hope to see more students from Andhra Pradesh take up courses in the US that will best fit their academic and professional needs in future.”

Pointing out how students here are often misguided by ‘agencies’ with little knowledge about US universities, Grotsky said that the fair would help clear such ambiguities. “Interested students will get an opportunity to directly interact with universities and scholars who are associated with US institutions. Hence, the information sent by them will be genuine.”

During their visit to Hyderabad, the participating universities are also scheduled to meet the managements of three institutes, Chirec Public School, Sreenidhi International School and Keshav Memorial Institute of Technology, to understand the requirement of Indian students and guide them accordingly about applying to US varsities.

“There is a huge interest among students in AP to study in the US. So, we have incorporated these school visits,” said Renuka Raja Rao, country co-ordinator, Educational Advising Services, USIEF. Besides educational opportunities, the fair will also guide interested students with visa applications and other queries.

The universities participating include University of California-Berkeley, University of California-Los Angeles, University of California-Irvine, Ohio State University-Main Campus, University of Kentucky and University of South Florida, among others.
