CAT Likely to be Held Twice from Next Year.

Common Admission Test, popularly known as CAT, conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) for selecting eligible candidates for admission into various post graduate level management programmes, might be held twice in a year. The scores of CAT is used as part of the selection procedure for short-listing candidates desiring to pursue business administration programmes in the IIMs, Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and numerous other top B-schools in India and abroad.

As per sources, the organizers of the reputed computerized test are on talks about making the test available biannually for the convenience of the working class aspirants, who are left with no choice but to wait for an entire year for appearing in the exam and wait for the declaration of the results. The organizers are planning to implement the twice-a-year pattern from next year.

With the increase in the number of institutes taking CAT scores in consideration as part of the screening procedure, the number of students sitting for the test is also increasing drastically. According to an IIM official, the number of working class candidates desiring to take the CAT is considerable, but the routine professional life urges them to drop back.

Confirming the news, Prof Jankiraman Moorthy, Convenor for CAT 2012, said that the decision to make CAT biannual will benefit the candidates, from the working class, willing to appear for the test. However, the plan is only in its initial stage and no final decision has been made so far, added Moorthy. Details on the testing pattern, timing of the second testing session, etc. will be settled with only after the ongoing discussions come to an end.

With the establishment of CAT biannually, working professionals would certainly take this news as a positive step. They would be able to apply and sit for the CAT as per their convenience, depending upon the semester in which they wish to take admission – Fall or Spring, not just in institutes in India, but across universities and colleges on foreign lands.

Inter syllabus all set for overhaul.

Intermediate syllabus is in for a complete overhaul for the coming academic year. Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) on Monday decided to make major changes to its first and second year syllabi for textbooks more suitable to national level competitive examinations. The revised syllabi for the intermediate course will be effective from 2012-’13 for first-year students and from 2013-’14 for those in their second year.

Following a meeting held in the city, BIE has given orders initiating revision of syllabi in mathematics, physics, chemistry, botany and zoology. The revision has come after a gap of five years, officials said. Orders were given on Monday to develop syllabi conforming to National Core Curriculum guidelines proposed by the central government. As part of this exercise, the state will be adopting the NCERT pattern to compose textbooks

The board is yet to develop content for the textbooks to be introduced from the coming academic year. BIE will also be conducting a three-day content development workshop based on the new syllabi in December.

The board will enlist the assistance of national-level subject experts, university professors and lecturers from degree and junior colleges. The content is expected to be finalised by January 31, 2011 and the books printed soon after, officials said. The changes would see students having to study a little more than what they have been handling so far.

“NCERT has several sections, especially in Zoology and Botany, which are not currently part of intermediate syllabus. With National Eligibility and Entrance Test looming large for medical aspirants, the syllabus revision is welcome,” said a senior lecturer from Narayana Junior College.

Government junior college lecturers’ association, too, has welcomed the decision to change the intermediate syllabus as this might also help students preparing for other competitive examinations.

“There are several students from AP who appear for tests like IIT-JEE, which are based on NCERT texts. The change in curriculum will help students from the state to crack these exams,” said Madhusudan Reddy, general secretary of the lecturers’ body. Intermediate students in the city said that the proposed change will reduce the academic burden on them.

“Now, most students have to study two syllabi, state and central, in order to do well in the intermediate and competitive national level exams. Most of our seniors used to concentrate on the national level examinations till the last minute and resort to cramming for the IPE syllabus with intermediates round the corner.

“It will be easier for us as we would have to study one syllabus for both boards and IIT-JEE, AIEEE and NEET,” said class X student Srilakshmi Damodar.

Erring engg colleges face action.

The All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) has decided to crack the whip on erring engineering colleges in the state. The council will be conducting surprise visit to over 150 colleges, reportedly with below par facilities. AICTE has already filed cases against some colleges with the CBI.

Most of the colleges do not have enough facilities including libraries and classrooms, the officials said. AICTE has received several complaints from parents and students on the these colleges. The inspections are expected to be held in the next three months, officials said.

CMAT-2012 will be conducted online for nine days from 20th to 28th Feb.

In order to reduce the burden of students attending to multiple examinations, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has launched the first National level Common Management Admission Test (CMAT)-2012 and facilitated institutions to select suitable students for admission to all management programs approved by AICTE for year 2012-13.

This initiative has been taken to address the issue of physical, mental and financial stress being imposed on the students through number of entrance examinations conducted by the institutions for admission to Management Programs in AICTE approved institutions based on relevant judgments in the Supreme Court.

The Common Management Admission Test (CMAT)-2012 will be conducted online in 61 cities from 20th February to 28th February, 2012 and scores awarded will be used for admission in the post graduate management programs both at Degree & Diploma level, all over India for year 2012-13.

Candidates should note that there will be negative marking as well, for each wrong answer, 1 mark will be deducted.

The respective Secretaries of the state dealing with technical education and Vice chancellors of the universities have been requested to advise the competent authority for admissions in their respective States & jurisdiction to use the merit list of CMAT-2012 for allotment of students in the AICTE approved management institutions for academic year 2012-13.

The institutions and State governments are required to register online free of charge for opting to CMAT-2012 scores for admissions for academic year 2012-13. The minority institutions shall effect admissions as per the provision available for such categories.
